Our Origin Story

Growing up in the Caribbean, the ocean has always been an integral part of James’s life. The founder for this company, James has been a keen scuba diver since the age of 13, qualifying as a professional PADI Divemaster and working in different locations around the world.

After travel restrictions eased in 2021, James travelled to the Bahamas for a long-anticipated dive trip to a national marine park, but what he found there was nothing of the sort. Where vibrant reefs filled with all manner of aquatic life should have been, there were barren underwater wastelands. Broken coral graveyards, bleached from climate change and destroyed by illegal fishing fleets were all that remained, with barely a fish to be seen.

It was from this heart-breaking trip that the vision for Circular Sea was born; to ethically and sustainably produce fish without harming the environment. The belief that there had to be a better way, and the resolve to bring it into existence has been a driving force in his life ever since.

Meet the Founder

James is a graduate with a BEng (Hons) in Engineering Design from the University of Bristol and a member of the international Institute of Engineering & Technology (IET). He is one of the few recipients of the IET’s national UK Engineering Horizon scholarship awarded to those who have faced and overcome personal challenges to pursue engineering, and the University of Bristol’s Edmund Boulton Scholarship for Engineering Design, granted to the top entrants in the degree.

He has previous experience within industry working for Renishaw, a high-tech precision engineering company within their R&D department, and with LettUs Grow, a disruptive and successful agri-tech farming start-up. He is also completing a bioengineering course in designing recirculating aquaculture systems with Cornell University, an Ivy League pioneer of land-based aquaculture, as well as the IMTA and Precision Aquaculture course developed by the EU IMPAQT project.

Above water, James enjoys 3D printing, wood working, and salsa dancing. Below the surface, James is a keen diver and enjoys going with his camera as often as possible!
